Professor Frieder W. Scheller,
Institute of Biochemistry and Biology, University of Potsdam, Germany

Frieder W. SchellerProf. Scheller received his diploma in chemistry from the Technical College of Merseburg and his PhD from the Humboldt University of Berlin. For many years he headed the Department of Bioelectrochemistry/Biosensors at the Central Institute of Molecular Biology of the German Academy of Sciences, Berlin-Buch. Since 1993 he has been Professor of Analytical Biochemistry at the University of Potsdam. In 2001 and 2002 he was President of the German Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Since January 2004 he has been Vice-President of the University of Potsdam and since 2007 Head of Department at the Potsdam Fraunhofer Institute of Biomedical Engineering.

In the focus of his scientific career is electrochemistry starting from his diploma up to his professorship.

  • As early as 1975 he developed microstructured electrodes and simulated the non-linear diffusion during his PhD work at the Humboldt University in Berlin
  • Since 1970 he has been working in the field of protein electrochemistry and the development of electrochemical biosensors:
    • Elucidation of the interfacial behaviour of globular proteins at mercury electrodes
    • Characterization of the direct electron transfer of hemoproteins, especially cytochrome P-450 and the seleno protein glutathione peroxidase
    • Multi-layer electron transfer in polyelectrolyte cytochrome c architectures
    • Design of coupled enzyme reactions in sensors for signal amplification
    • Simulation of logic operations, e.g. switches, amplifiers in enzyme sensors
    • Development of new recognition elements, e.g. nucleic acid aptamers and molecularly imprinted polymers.
